Lot's of stuff been going on. Went to DC weekend before last and met my sweetie's grandfather. Very interesting indeed. We stayed at a nice hotel in the city and walked around a lot. It was hot as balls. We saw a bunch of the monuments and I got a heat rash. We toured a couple of the neat little neighborhoods, namely Dupont Circle and Adam's Morgan, where we saw a good little blues band in a bar named Madam's Organ. In Dupont Circle we enjoyed the open-all-night bookstore with the bar and restaurant inside. It was nice to experience a real city. A good time was had.
Back at home, we've been searching for a new place to live. Our goal for now is to save some money as living in Decatur has proven to be underwhelming and overpriced.
Finished Delilo's White Noise last week. I liked it better than anything else of his that I'd read, but I'm not ready to call it one of the great novels of the 20th century, as this new edition claims. To the extent that it is the story of an American family in a particular time and place, it holds up well. But it often reeks of 80's grad school postmodernism in a way that does not hold up particularly well. Which is perhaps to say that when it isn't trying to be profound it manages to be pretty good. I'm pretty sure that Delilo must have been reading some Ballard. Crash and The Atrocity Exhibition seem to have rubbed off on him and the book brought back lots of memories for me of that time. So much of that stuff seems silly now.
The future holds...weddings. Two in two weeks next month. One in London and one in Tennessee. Good times to be had. I will be poor for a while after but that's not what I'll remember in ten years. And in a few weeks we will be moving. So an eventful summer in store.
I will be following up on some of the God talk shortly. Hope everyone is well.
