So friday night I went to the symphony for the very first time. It was something I had been meaning to do for a very long time but somehow I'd never gotten around to it. It helps that I now have someone to go to the symphony with who doesn't think of it as boring or a chore. I am essentially a bumpkin when it comes to classical music but I have listened to a fair bit of it and I love Beethoven, so when I saw the ASO was doing the Fifth I decided I was going to go. It was wonderful. Hearing it performed live added depth and texture to the music that even the excellent recording of Herbert Von Karajan's that I have been listening to for years does not reveal. It was delightful to be surprised by some small touch I hadn't noticed before, or the power of an accent that a record cannot do justice to. As a musician who writes music, the dynamics of symphonic instrumentation were fascinating--you could almost see the music move through the orchestra like a current. Oh what I wouldn't do to have a two dozen plus member string section at my disposal. I shall be going back to the symphony. I'd like to hear something jarring, angular and modern I think. I'll keep my eyes and ears open.
