the rules of the game

The Times Magazine profile of Jack Abramoff is breathtaking.

It's worth reading the whole thing, but before you do, try your best to set aside the calloused indifference to reality that we consumers have developed and nurtured. Really consider the implications.

Abramoff's defense amounts to "this is how things work and I played by the rules of the game." I think he's telling the truth. Let that sink in.

Of course, he is being dumped, denials are being issued, and Abramoff will become an example of what those other folks do. But he'll be back...just think of the resurrection of all those other scandalized political figures. He's thinking about the movie business again.

I need to understand America. I'm going to go reread some of James Ellroy's later novels.
