One thing I have learned of late: hair can be helpful. My former disdain for my own was, if not mistaken, at least overstated.
One thing I have been reminded of: I love garlic.
So...things are ok at the moment. On a meandering personal note, I am in the process of moving. I'm not going very far from where I've been nesting for the last six months or so (the life of the restless peripatetic adjunct) but I am moving into what is, in Atlanta, the South Asian neighborhood. I can walk up the street and buy saris and Indian jewelry or Pakistani groceries, get some fresh Halal meat or rent a Bollywood musical. Big Country was helping me move some stuff and decided he needed some lamb vindaloo so I got to begin exploring my new environment. We ate at a newer Indian place with a Bollywood theme. There are Indian movie posters and such and a big screen showing musical numbers from Bollywood films. The Indian character and the very good food keep it from feeling like some weird globalized Planet Hollywood hybrid. And they have a full bar, so I suspect I will be checking it out again. We'll go the next time you visit...maybe wander next door and get you fitted for a sari or a shalwar khamees.
And speaking of the cultural mingling of India and the United States, in the Times book review this week, Teller (of Penn and Teller fame) reviews The Rise of the Indian Rope Trick. The review is worth reading and makes me want to read the book: history, chicanery, memory, cultural misunderstanding and magic. I've added it to the list.
