A cryptic figure: since President Bush declared an end to major combat on May 1st, 7% of American military fatalities have been suicides. There were only two reported suicides in the first Gulf War. I wonder why I only found this in the British papers. If anyone's aware of it being reported at home, please let me know.
update: yes, the media here has picked this up in the last two or three days, and it was even getting some attention last year. This USA Today story repeats some of what was in the Guardian story that ran a few weeks ago, but in typical USA Today fashion offers little or nothing in the way of insight or analysis.
